12 distractions of the week.

This week has been such a whirlwind. I did not expect to be this distracted from "real life"and it's only Thursday.
This hurricane has been consuming my life, including me worrying non stop about my parents who stayed home and braced the storm, who are fine and safe (Thank God). We are just hoping the water does not rise any more or else we will have something to worry about.
Got some other crazy, but good, news that I'm still trying to process.
Had my 24th birthday on Wednesday (the 29th) which is also the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the day Isaac hit.
My husband has two exams this week. I've really tried not to freak out about how little I've seen him.
In the midst of all of the above, I am really trying to finish editing photos from a shoot this weekend.
And Repeat. This has been more like a laundry washing cycle that will never finish.

So, with that all said, sorry for the lack of saucy blog posts. And lack of posts period.
I will try to rejuvenate this weekend and come back in full swing.

Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers through this all, I really do appreciate it.

12 my mind is elsewhere.

Found this quote on pinterest, and it just about sums up my feelings for today the days to come.
I am a strong believer in that God only gives you as much as you can handle.

19 Fall Fashion Must-Haves

Link to all Items Here

Even though my birthday isn't until next Wednesday, I am celebrating a bit early this weekend by going shopping for some fall favorites I've been eying. Brown and Black and my two base colors in jackets, boots, and purses that I believe are a necessity for fall. Some cringe at pairing them together, but I've recently indulged in pairing the two colors together and just love the look. What are you thoughts on this??
Above I listed my fall must-haves. I do not own a leather jacket period, so that is the first thing I want to scratch off my list when shopping this weekend. I have both a brown and black pair of high boots, but I just adore all riding boot styles, so I cave when I see a style I'd wear. Closed in heels is another item I really need for fall. I have some with a wedge, but have found myself on more than one occasion needing a pair to make an outfit more formal, and the flats/wedges didn't cut it. Another favorite are scarves. I already have a million, but I really need some of circular style scarves that I don't need to manual scrunch. Droopy hats are just too cute. I adore them and just love wearing any kind of hat during the fall. Those totes are so stylish right now. I'd feel so sophisticated if I had one right now. It's a great bag for work or for a travel day. I desperately need a pair of aviators. I lost mine early spring and have yet to replace them. I also love the shades that are two tone, very chic and classic looking. It's my favorite sunglasses style at the moment.

What are some of your fall must-haves? I'd love to hear your ideas before my shopping spree on Saturday!

I hope y'all have a wonderful weekend! Mine will be full of wine sipping, shopping, eating yummy food, and celebration! Follow me on instagram to see the fun: britt_themagnoliapair

Happy Friday!

22 Happy Birthday, Little Blog.

Wow. A year ago I began the journey of blogging! I've loved every moment of it. Even though I don't consider myself getting a grasp on blogging until December of 2011, my blog did officially begin a year ago with this little post. Don't bother looking, I barely had a grasp on sizing images or writing for that matter. haha

I vividly remember starting this blog. August 20ish I was trying to come up with a name and writing my options on paper then running into my husband's study room to ask him which he liked...we decided on A Southern Bee Diary. ehh I cringe just thinking of it. How did I even think it was cute? Months later I realized I needed a more sophisticated name and settled on The Magnolia Pair. When writing posts for this blog it is key that I keep it centered on my husband and I's life and our Louisiana roots that we are so proud of.

Blogging has truly given me a sense of who I am and what I strive to be. I learned a lot about myself with this blog, and I think I have improved on some things along the way. Thanks to blogging I feel up to date with the best etsy shops, know about the erin condren life planner,  bought the most sought after j crew bauble necklace fad, and more. But more importantly are the people who supply these fresh new trends, and that is my blog friends. There is something indescribable that I can't explain about the friends I've made along the way. They are just amazing, and I seriously could name so many of them who have touched my life and been there for me in hard situations. If that's not rewarding then I don't know what is. I've been brought to tears (happy tears) by some of the comments that people have left me. It's really incredible the support you get. I may not be able to respond to everyone, but trust me I know who leaves me comments and I read them everyday and they bring me so much happiness.

That brings me to me to my next point: Appreciation. I just want to tell everyone who is reading this blog, Thank You. Sincerly and truthfully, thank you for reading my posts. Knowing that people actually read my posts makes me feel so blessed. I used to write posts and no one saw them. I've come a long way within a year, and I owe it to every reader out there for that, because I couldn't do this without you. I mean, I am just a little over a 100 away from 1,000 readers. That's surreal and the most amazing thing. I don't even have nearly that many facebook friends. So, Thank You, I love each and every one of you for your ongoing support.

I can't wait to see what this next year brings!

Besos!

59 Home Tour: Dining Room

Well today marks the first day of the Home Tour Series! I am so excited to show off our dining room! I love this room and had so much fun decorating. Joel and I came from a tiny apartment where our living room and dining room were one. We could not even pull out the leaf at our old place, so when we found out we could expand our table I was so thrilled!
When decorating our home, I always knew I wanted white pieces. Everyone who sees our chairs and couches asks me how I could manage white furniture, but I love it, and honestly with the cushions being washable it's so easy. Plus, thanks to Ikea, if a serious wine leak happened, their covers are very inexpensive to replace. White is airy, free, crisp, and peaceful, so I knew I wanted it as the main color. If you're thinking about going white, then I think you should do it. I don't regret it one bit!

Check the bottom of the post for item specifics. Enjoy!

Well, there you have it! There are still some things I want to do, but for now, this room is complete! I am making a goal to try to have weekly home series posts. I have two rooms and both bathrooms either done or very close to being done, so I have a feeling those will be next. I hope you liked the first series!

11 savoring the moment.

Well, it's so weird to think that the hubby starts his second year of medical school today. I am so indifferent to how I feel about it all. As crazy as it sounds, sometimes I feel happy that he is starting back. His summer research job was far from laid back and I often felt like it was worse than when he was in school. Yet, I know that the long hours of studying will be back, and there will be a lots of "me" time. The unpredictability is probably the worst. Being told "I'll be done by 10" and then it's midnight and I've fallen asleep on the couch, and he wakes me up to bring me to bed is hard on us both. Then there are days where he will be free for a whole week and we'll have an entire weekend of no studying and it will be just "us" time. As hard as it is now, I think this is the easy part. Working in the health field I see residents day in and day out and I hear about their chaotic lives, on call schedule, and tireless 80-90 hour work weeks they've been working. I know I'll get my wake up call when Joel goes to residency. So, right now I will just keep my mind focused on savoring the moment, because even though these times are busy, I know that they are a lot less busy then what they will be when he is finished medical school.
This year I am sure will go by so fast. Before I know it May will be here and  Joel will be starting clinical rotations, delivering babies, and sometimes having to work weekends, which will all be so very weird for me.

The quote above are literally the perfect words to explain the commitment that Joel and I have made to one another through medical school, residency, and for the rest of our lives . We both know that we are in it together and without our love and support for one another, that this would never be possible.

So cheers to another year and cheers to a great one! I know it will be rough at times, but I am excited to see what this year will bring!

*Also, I am now getting back to those emails that many have sent me. I have not ignored them, just really wanted to shut off for a bit to enjoy these past few days with my husband :)

& Tomorrow starts the Home Tour, YAY!!

24 back to school i go.

Last night I had my first photography class!
Wait, let's rewind.
Back in June I applied to undergrad as a post-bach student, and got in. I scheduled this beginning photography class and had been looking forward to it since. Yeah, I have a dslr, I take decent pictures, but I have no formal experience, and that really bugged me. How can I take professional pictures for people with no courses? Sure, people pick it up all the time and do phenomenal, but I just really wanted this basic building block of experience before I set out to use those words "professional."
Yesterday was pretty cool. I arrived late (5 minutes to class). I was so embarrassed. I literally wandered around the labyrinth hallway for 10 minutes until I heard people talking. I walked in and I was the last to play the "introduce yourself" game. It was obvious I was the oldest in the class and I stuttered while speaking of my name and interesting fact...in which I said "I love animals" ... I mean did I really just say that? Now my classmates really probably think I am weird.
After going over the syllabus/supply list we looked at some photos on the projector and that's when I just was overcome with utter joy. It was happening. I am finally going to get this formal experience and will learn how to use my camera.
This class is basic slr (no digital) black and white photography, where we will develop our own photos and learn how to properly use the manual mode. No automatic is allowed.
The teacher made a comment that stuck out to me the most.."This class is slr black and white photography, but don't worry, all of the skills you will learn with aperture and shutter speed can be applied to digital." Another sigh of relief. I was concerned that with the non digital class, that nothing would overlap, but I was wrong, looks like I'll be learning a lot....oh and spending a lot! Photography must be the priciest hobby of all.
At least my mom is letting me have her vintage camera! Chhh-eck it out!
I'll be sure to scan in my work so that I can share what I am doing and learning! Wish me luck :)

20 Home Improvement

Today, I debated on writing a post or not. I told myself I would not post until I responded to every comment from the last two posts, and well I did it. Lately I've felt the need to make sure I acknowledge my readers more. This summer has been so laid back, and I have been lazy with emails. Y'all give me so much support and I try to remember that no matter how many emails I get. So cheers!

Onto this weekend... Remember last week I made a list of things to get done before September? Well, we're scratching off things people and I am so excited that the house is starting to look like an actual house! I PROMISE I will start the Home Tour series this week. That's a promise. More like a a personal threat to myself that I need to get my shiz together and just do it. Here's a little sneak peak of what we've been doing this weekend!

Saturday we started on the gallery wall. We woke up at 7:30 to catch some garage sales, and after going to two horrible ones, we hit the gold mine on the third and we did good people. That would be 9 picture frames and a medium size straw basket (not pictured) for $40. I left with a really big smile on my face. I spray painted them and pulled out our white frames to put together a mock up for the wall. It's up, and we just have a few frames to fill now! After all of this, Joel and I rewarded ourselves by going to our favorite Mexican restaurant for yummy food and margaritas!

I worked on painting our china hutch on Saturday, then Joel took over on Saturday evening and Sunday to finish the rest while I did household cleaning. He did good. Very good. I may make him my personal crafting assistant! This hutch was really ugly y'all. I think we gave it life. Thanks to Annie Sloan chalk paint, it's a beauty! We used Old Ochre and Soft wax. Have you heard of her paint? No, go visit her store right now. It's basically a crafter's dream paint. No sanding, no priming...just paint! It's amazing.

+ Un pack ALL boxes 1/2 way done
+ Set up Joel's office 1/2 way done
+ Paint the China Hutch DONE
+ Get gallery wall photos/prints printed DONE
+ Work on the front yard On track!
+ Spray paint our mailbox
+ Get one room done each weekend On track!
+ Accomplish above and take photos for Home Tour posts! Almost there
+ Go garage sale hopping, and find more vintage frames DONE
+ Find fabric for our couch pillows DONE
+ Organize the pantry
+ Get our single chair re-upholstered (that's a stretch)
+ Put mirror up in master bedroom
+ Hang netting on our bed
+ Find and buy a dryer... this is a funny/sad story really.

I am really proud y'all ! We have been working so hard to get our house ready :) Hope everybody had a wonderful weekend! After readings other blogs today, I think it was home improvement weekend for many!

30 Hot Pink & Polka Dots

Blazer: H&M similar color // similiar style
Top: H&M similar
Skinny Pants: Banana Republic
Shoes: Jessica Simpson

So, two weekends ago I mentioned that I had been dying to go to the H&M in Huntsville. Well, I successfully persuaded the husband to take me, and off we went. I came back with lots of goodies that I am quite fond of. I put this little number together and thought it would be really cute for work attire. I am loving polka dots right now and have always wanted a hot pink blazer, so I am loving this combo.

Funny side story: This is the day we took our one year pictures with Laura, and I was already dolled up from the shoot so I once again convinced the husband to go outside and take my pictures. MAJOR FAIL. Mosquitos were swarming us and we got eaten alive. So, there is the excuse for lack of posing, smiling, and amount of pictures. My poor husband got welps... I have yet to ask him to take my pictures for an outfit post.

And here is a pitiful outtake on me swatting the beasts...
never again will we try to take pictures at mosquito hour...

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I am hoping it doesn't go by too fast.

37 Blog Tips No.1

I am nowhere near a pro or a veteran blogger, but I do think it'd be great to share with y'all what I have learned from blogging. I get a lot of direct emails asking for advice, which I feel so honored to even be asked those kinds of questions. Some of my best advice came from asking my blog friends when I was just starting out.
This blog is coming up on a year pretty soon, so I figured I'd share my tips in honor of this wonderful year so far. A lot of what I wrote is from personal experience and what has/hasn't worked, so I hope this information is helpful to y'all as well.

You Want Readers?
1. Make friends. Seriously, I can't stress this enough. Form relationships with other bloggers who are similar to you. You will cherish these bloggers and call them friends if you actually get to know them. This will also be a great way to be thought of when that person needs a guest post or wants to start a link up.

2. Put yourself out there by commenting on other blogs. Thoughtful comments are always the best. Leaving a comment saying "follow me back" or "follow each other" is just a turn off. People want to get to know you.

3. Sponsor other blogs. Whether this is swapping or paying for ads, this is a great way to get more traffic to your blog. Not many will just find your blog by chance. Swapping was the best thing for me in the beginning, since I was not ready to whip out my wallet.

4. Do the occasional link up. Don't overdue it by doing one every day. Whenever I do a link up I try to get the within the first 10 spots because I know that it's more likely to get more clicks (typical marketing strategy).

5. It's very common that the blogs we admire are the successful ones. Look through their posts and see what they are doing. It's great to get inspiration from them that way you can stay on track with the direction you want to take your blog.

6. DO reach out to other bloggers that may have a larger following. I will never be able to thank Jenni enough for her help she gave me when I was starting to blog.

FAQ I get:
1. How did you grow your blog?
I grew my blog "organically" they say until I had about 450 followers. I didn't pay for sponsors until then because I did not know if I would keep the blog. Commenting and following other blogs was the main way I grew. I had a lot of free time when I first started my blog, so commenting was a great way for me to pass time and get to know other bloggers. Time is essential.

2. Can I guest post for you?
I am all about guest posters being on my blog no matter how many # of followers you have. You can look at my past guest posters, and they are all different ranges. But, I have started to limit my guest posts since I deleted my personal facebook. My family and friends want to come on here and read about me. I still will have them, just not as much.

3.Will you guest post for me?
I don't mind guest posting if I don't have other commitments at the time. I love that I have been asked several times to talk about my hometown of New Orleans. Many think it's bad blog manners to ask a blog with a bigger following to guest post, which I can totally understand and somewhat agree with, but I will just take it case by case. If I feel like the person just wants to use me, and has never made contact with me before, then I will definitely say no. But if you are a frequent visitor/commenter then I will definitely consider it if the timing is right.

4. How do you make a button/ where is the coding?
This takes quite some time to learn if you are new. But, you can re-size, edit, and get an image link by making a photobucket account. Then, read this post on how to use the coding. Be patient, it can be overwhelming.

5. Do you respond to every comment?
Physically and mentally I cannot do it anymore. I do read every comment, and they make me smile. I will always answer questions and direct messages sent to my email though. If I am not busy, there will be nights when I respond to every comment. Especially since it is summer and my husband is home, I just do not have the time.

6. How do you decide who to sponsor?
I look at a couple of things before I commit to buying an ad space. Stats: I want to see them. Large followings don't always mean heavy traffic. I sometimes ask their previous sponsors how their experience was. I usually don't invest in ads that don't have a feature or giveaway option UNLESS they are established and have good traffic and many pageviews.

Tips:
1. Link Ups: (here is a little extra from what I covered above) can be a very good way to gain traffic and new readers. I did a lot of them when I first started blogging, and I kind of regret that. I steered away from the main reason I started blog and felt like I wasn't being "me". If I do one, I now limit it to one per week, because they still are fun to do every now and then.

2. Especially in the beginning, do try to respond to your comments via email (especially the questions and meaningful ones) many are hoping you will respond to them so they can get to know you.

3. Invest in a design. (There are many free ones too) Aesthetics are really important for attracting people to read more. If you blog is cluttered or has links that don't work, most likely the person will not stay long.

4. Good writing. I am guilty of grammar and spelling mistakes, but proof reading your post before you hit publish is always a smart idea.

5. Take mean comments with a grain of salt. You will most likely get them. Everyone does. But don't dismiss them if they are constructive criticism. I once got a comment that my blog was "not fresh" had "poor writing" etc. It upset me at first, but really, I learned from it and actually thought about my writing the next time I was making a post.

6. Have an updated About Me page (if you have one). People really want to know who they are reading about. That is one of the first places I click once I get to one's blog. I went through a frenzy last year when I tried my hardest to find as many "Medical School Wives" as I possibly could, and the About Me page was key to finding them.

7. Post quality pictures. This does not mean you have to have an expensive camera to post pictures. Even if it's your iPhone, be sure to size them large enough so your readers can see them w/o having to click it. Also, editing with picmonkey is an added bonus to edit pictures or to add text. They also offer collages which can be beneficial. Another important thing. Is to watermark your pictures if you value them. I have heard many stories of picture thieves taking your photos and even posing as you and your family on another blog. Creepy I know.

Technicality Tips:
1. Remove word verification. Right now. Do it. It's a pain for us Real people  to constantly have to prove we are not a robot in order to comment on your post. Most of the time I won't comment on those posts because in the past I've sat there for many minutes trying to prove I wasn't a robot and got very frustrated.

2. INSTEAD, change your comment settings so that you do not allow anonymous commenters. This is where 99.9% of your spam comments come from.

3. Connect your email to your blogger profile, and respond to your comments by email. Many will not go back to your blog to read the comment you left under theirs. You can read Erin's How-To guide on how to do this Here!

4. For some reason, it is much more user friendly to use the "pop out" comment form. You can change that in your comment tab. It does make it easier for other bloggers to not have to re-load your page just to comment.

I may turn this into a series, because I feel like I can elaborate so much more. But for now I think this is a good vague overview and will be helpful to many. I know some are nervous to ask these questions, so this will make it easier in that sense too. If you have any more questions, feel free to shoot me an email or Ask me on formspring! I love that thing, and always get excited when someone asks me a question :)

16 Making Lists & A Link Up Party!

Today, I am going to make myself some weekend promises. After I read Lauren's post I also realized how little motivation I have had and how I have not done much with the house. We've been here well over a month, and boxes are still piled up. I am almost embarrassed by it all. Then, I saw Sarah's list that she posted yesterday, and was so inspired to get things done. When he starts up medical school again at the end of August, it will be just me cleaning, doing yard work, and organizing the house on most weekends. I think it's really smart of me to take advantage of him while I can. Although, he doesn't know this yet...but he will soon! Maybe when I print this list he'll catch my motivation energy and willingly help. One can only hope!

things to accomplish (before September):
+ Un pack ALL boxes
+ Set up Joel's office
+ Paint the China Hutch
+ Get gallery wall photos/prints printed
+ Work on the front yard
+ Spray paint our mailbox
+ Get one room done each weekend
+ Accomplish above and take photos for Home Tour posts!
+ Go garage sale hopping, and find more vintage frames
+ Find fabric for our couch pillows
+ Organize the pantry
+ Get our single chair re-upholstered (that's a stretch)
+ Put mirror up in master bedroom
+ Hang netting on our bed
+ Find and buy a dryer... this is a funny/sad story really.

Okay, that is 15 small and big things to before Labor day weekend. Realistically I think most of it can be done. We hopefully will have time/energy to do it. Wish us luck...AHH

18 Capturing Love.

It has been well over a year since I have photographed professionally. It was so exhilarating to get to capture Laura and Eddie! I was so nervous to photograph them since I hadn't positioned/photographed people in a long time. I warmed up pretty quickly and I think I got some good shots of them. They were so sweet and cute, which makes for a smooth and easy shoot. I am so thankful that Laura gave me this opportunity! Check out their pictures below :)

Also, here is my photography fan page, where you can see all my work!
